I consider myself to be a trendy, young and chic mother. Most people do not see the inside of their friends closets. A look into my closet would give you a birds eye view of the vivid colors and patterns it contains. When I became pregnant I was determined to wear all the wonderful colors and patterns I already had within my closet as long as I could. After going nine months with a growing belly I found that some garments did not have as much stretch as I thought they would. Hence the reason maternity clothing was invented! If I was a seasoned mom I am sure I would have learned this already but, being a trendy, young and chic mother (or so I thought) I may have let me pride slip a little.

Maternity clothing is something I did not want to find myself rummaging around looking for. Low and behold I found myself at six months pregnant and wearing the best pair of stretchy maternity pants and a snug top that flattered my belly holding my precious baby boy. Yep, maternity clothing had taken over my closet. Thank goodness for the internet! It was the easiest and most convenient way to shop. My tired feet and swollen ankles could only last so long in a mall. On the internet I found some of the greatest deals and steals on maternity clothing sites. I was determined to find the best quality at the best price.

After all, if I was going to transition my closet into a maternity clothes haven I had to find the perfect combination of comfort, price and fashion. My search lead me to starting my own business of selling maternity clothing and nursing clothing online, FashionForMommy.com. I found a designer, Annee Matthew, who put all the pieces of a perfect garment together. This was the key to transitioning my closet. From comfortable and sexy pajamas to a dress that can take me out on the town or to a play date, I finally found myself surrounded by a different yet, fabulous wardrobe!

It is so exciting when you find maternity clothes that will work during pregnancy through nursing and still look great when you are back to your pre-pregnancy weight. A closet that can transition is a closet full of quality clothes with the right price tag. Don not get discouraged wondering about what you are going to do with your old duds. You can cash in on your old clothes. How are you going to do this you might ask? Don not have time for a garage sale? I understand where you are coming from. The solution is a consignment store. They will take your gently worn clothes and give you a portion of the profit when they are sold. Now that you have some spare cash you can do some shopping!

Keep in mind that some of the clothes you had in your old closet will still fit in with your maternity clothes. I have become quite fond of layering clothing. With breastfeeding I generally wear a nursing bra, tank, shirt and something to throw on if it is cold. Make sure your new closet is versatile, full of color, patterns and comfortable options. By this time you can look back into your wardrobe and be completely happy with the transition you have made from young, trendy and chic to young, trendy and mother!

Venturing into motherhood does not mean that you need to be out of sync with the fashion world. Gone are the days when maternity clothes used to hang loose like tents. Today mothers all around the world are sporting stylish outfits that not only make them look great, but feel great as well. Here are some options that you can explore:

Maternity Jeans

For women who love their jeans, here‘s good news. Almost all the brands that make clothes for pregnant women make maternity jeans as well. Your maternity clothes shopping list should include a pair of jeans right at the top. These jeans are designed to be stylish as well as comfortable, and are offered in ‘over the bump’ and ‘under the bump’ styles, with many different cuts, colours, wash effects, fit systems and at prices ranging from below $50 to over $300.

Shirts and tops

Shirts and tops add variety to your maternity clothes. While it is important to remember that your maternity wear is only temporary and therefore you don’t need too much of it, it is also important to have variety. There is plenty of variety in this category that is available in the market. Most of these shirts and tops are made out of soft and stretchable fabric keeping in mind your growing size yet making you look stylish too. What’s more theses fabrics are also breathable and therefore keep you comfortable. Some of the more advanced designs can also be worn after the baby arrives, so you get extra use from your investment.

Formal wear
Formal or evening wear is just something that you cannot do without, especially if you are a ‘mom to be’ with a hectic social life. What will you wear if you are invited to a party? Therefore a small part of your maternity clothing needs to cater to this as well. Some designs of evening dresses can be worn in up to 6 different ways, and these are the ultimate in versatile maternity clothes are concerned. You will get six dresses for the price of one, and you can continue to wear it after pregnancy. Value for money and stunning looks - a brilliant combination, don’t you think?

Even if you re staying home during most of your pregnancy, time can slip through your fingers. After all, you re busy visiting your obstetrician to make sure everything is progressing according to plan. You re also shopping for diapers, nursery furnishings, strollers, and other items that will become necessary when your little one arrives. Don t forget to fit in time to shop for maternity clothes.

The good news is that you ll have more pregnancy clothing options at your disposal than your mom did. The bad news is that having so many options might make it difficult to choose what you need without blowing your budget. We ll get you started in the right direction with a few savvy maternity wear tips.

Start With A List Of Essentials

Building your pregnancy wardrobe is similar to shopping for groceries. You already have items you can use, and need to build your stock. The best way to get started is to look through your closet and create a list of maternity wear essentials.

You ll likely have several t shirts and tops you can wear. You might even have a few pairs of drawstring pants that will come in handy. Make room on your list for nursing bras, a pair of stylish maternity jeans, and a few stretchy tops. If you don t already have a pair, buy some low heeled shoes (flats are even better). When the time comes to go shopping, you ll have a handy list from which to work.

Mix, Match, And Layer

You ll save money by purchasing tops and bottoms in solid colors you enjoy. That will give you the flexibility of mixing and matching, something that is more difficult with patterned clothing items.

Also, buy your maternity clothes in layers. That way, when you become hot, you can strip off a layer or two rather than sweating and feeling uncomfortable. Experts claim that your metabolism can increase by up to 20 when you become pregnant. That makes your body more susceptible to a rise in temperature. Mix and match a few light sweaters with several tank tops.

Make Room For Your Feet

Your stomach may not be the only part of your body that expands while you re pregnant. Your feet can grow, too. This is due to the release of a natural hormone called relaxin the same hormone that will help your pelvis accommodate the birth of your baby.

Some moms to be find that their feet grow an entire size. If your shoes begin to feel a little tight as you enter your second trimester, invest in a larger pair (preferably slip ons). Not only will your feet be more comfortable, but you ll also feel more secure as your balance starts to shift.

Get Mileage Out Of Accessories

There are two big advantages to adding accessories to your maternity wear. First, they can infuse your outfits with a little sparkle and sophistication. Suppose you re mixing and matching solid colors; an elegant necklace, a colorful silk scarf, or subtle earrings will bring out the flavor. Second, you ll be able to wear them after giving birth to your baby. Unlike your maternity clothes, which you ll need to pack away until your next pregnancy, attractive bracelets, earrings, and other accessories can easily become part of your regular wardrobe.

Buy A Special Outfit

Chances are, you won t be able to stock your closet with every piece of maternity wear that catches your eye. That can become expensive. Instead, use part of your budget to purchase one special outfit that makes you feel confident, stylish, and sexy while you re pregnant. A black dress, timeless in its sophistication, can become your go to outfit whenever you enjoy an evening out with your partner. Add a sparkling necklace and a pair of earrings and your ensemble is sure to turn a few heads.

Stocking your closet with fun and fashionable maternity wear doesn t have to be a chore. If you follow the suggestions above, you ll build a pregnancy wardrobe that will keep you comfortable, confident, and hip.
